JOSEPH P. SPENCER STUDIO FOR THE ARTS

120 Jessie Street | Manhattan, Illinois 60442

The Joseph P. Spencer Studio for the Arts is the primary home of Spotlight Arts Collective — a place where artists of all ages come together to rehearse, learn, create, perform, and connect.

Spotlight moved into the Manhattan studio in 2022, creating a dedicated space for productions, rehearsals, workshops, classes, special events, and arts education. Today, the Studio is at the center of much of Spotlight’s year-round programming, including opportunities for developing actors and community members throughout the Lincoln-Way area.

A Legacy in the Arts

The Studio is named in memory of Joseph “Joe” P. Spencer, a beloved friend, husband, father, performer, and passionate supporter of the arts.

Those who knew Joe remember someone whose enthusiasm and personality could fill a room. He loved theatre not simply as an audience member, but as a participant — bringing talent, generosity, joy, and a genuine love of the arts to the people and theatre communities around him. After his death, friends wanted to create a lasting tribute that reflected the role the arts had played in his life.

When Spotlight Arts Collective prepared to open its new Manhattan facility in 2022, Joe's friends launched a community fundraising campaign to name the space in his honor. The response exceeded its goal, making the Joseph P. Spencer Studio for the Arts a permanent tribute to a man whose passion for theatre touched so many others.

Every rehearsal, class, performance, and new creative experience within the Studio carries that legacy forward — a place where people can discover the same joy in the arts that meant so much to Joe.
